You measured yourself, checked the size chart, ordered the right size, and it still feels uncomfortably tight. This happens more than you would think, and the cause is usually one of a few specific things that have nothing to do with your measurements being wrong.
It Might Just Be New
New shapewear is always tighter than it will be after a few wears. The compression fabric needs to be broken in. The fibers relax slightly with body heat and movement. Give it three to five wears before deciding it is the wrong size. Many women have returned shapewear that would have been perfect after a short break-in period.
The Style Does Not Match Your Shape
Being in the right size for a brand does not mean every style in that size will feel the same. A high-compression bodysuit in a size medium and an everyday brief in a size medium will feel very different. If the style you ordered has a higher compression rating than you expected, that is a style issue, not a size issue. The solution is choosing a lighter compression style in the same size, not sizing up.
Your Measurements Fall at the Top of the Size Range
Size charts work in ranges. If your measurements put you at the very top of a size range, you are wearing shapewear that is technically correct but fitted at its maximum tension. You are not wrong to find it tight. You are at the edge of what that size can comfortably accommodate. Sizing up one step will give you the same coverage with more comfort.
The Rise Is Too Short for Your Torso
When the rise is too short, the shapewear pulls upward from below and creates pressure at the waistband. This feels like tightness at the waist even when the circumference is correct. The fix is finding a longer-rise style in the same size, not a larger size.
When It Is Actually Too Small
If you have visible bulging above or below the waistband, cannot breathe comfortably, or feel any numbness or tingling, it is genuinely too small. Size up one. Do not try to break it in. A piece that is truly too small will not stretch into comfort over time.
