How to Size Shapewear When You Are Postpartum

Sizing shapewear postpartum is more complicated than at any other time because your body is in a state of change. Measurements that were accurate last month may not be accurate this month. Here is how to approach this practically and without frustration.

When to Start

For vaginal births, most medical guidance suggests waiting at least six weeks before wearing any compression garments. For C-sections, the incision site needs to be fully healed, which typically takes longer. Do not rush this. Wearing compression on an unhealed body does not speed recovery and can cause real discomfort. Check with your doctor if you are unsure.

How to Measure Postpartum

Measure yourself at the time of buying, not based on pre-pregnancy measurements. Your waist, hips, and bust may all be different to what you remember, and they are likely still changing. Take measurements on the same day you plan to order and use those numbers. Do not guess based on your pre-pregnancy size or your pregnancy size.

Which Size to Choose If You Are Between Sizes

Size up, without question. Your postpartum body is recovering. Comfort is the priority. Firm compression that is too tight is not going to help recovery and will be genuinely uncomfortable during a time when your body has enough going on. A piece that fits generously will be worn. A piece that is too tight will sit in a drawer.

What Style to Choose

For the first few months postpartum, high-waisted shorts or briefs with medium compression are the most practical option. They provide abdominal support without putting pressure on the chest, which matters if you are breastfeeding. Full bodysuits with chest coverage can interfere with nursing access and are less practical in the early postpartum period.

The Realistic Expectation

Your body postpartum will change for months. The shapewear size that fits you at eight weeks may not be the size you need at six months. Buy for now, not for your eventual postpartum body. You can reassess later.
